What do you do when a client calls and ask you to start a SharePoint service, but does not have the Service account password?
As most of you reading this article might know, in MOSS 2007 you could retrieve Service Account passwords using SPDocGen (http://spdocgen.codeplex.com/). Then in 2010 and 2013 the passwords are no longer stored as plain text and SPDocGen is unable to retrieve these passwords.
Well there is one method you could try.
- Check the IIS Application Pools to see if any of the Application pools is running under the specific service account, lucky for me it was
- Run Powershell as Administrator
- run the following (replace <NAME OF APP POOL> with the name of the app pool)
cmd.exe /c $env:windir\system32\inetsrv\appcmd.exe list apppool "<NAME OF APP POOL>" /text:ProcessModel.Password
